Know Your Rights
Resources for Our Community

January 28, 2026
At Hello Neighbor, we are committed to ensuring our community has access to clear, accurate information, practical tools, and trusted support. In times of heightened fear and uncertainty, knowledge and preparation are a critical first line of defense.
Our goal is to provide tools to make sure you feel informed, supported, and not alone.
This information is helpful for everyone — not just immigrants and refugees. When more people understand these rights, communities are better equipped to support one another.
Know Your Rights Videos
Hello Neighbor’s Know Your Rights trainings were created by our Immigration Legal Services team to help individuals understand what to do if approached by ICE and how to prepare ahead of time.
These free video trainings explain:
- What to do if ICE approaches you
- What ICE can and cannot legally do
- Your rights during an encounter
- How to prepare yourself and your family
The videos are available in English, Pashto, Dari, Arabic, Spanish, French, Somali, and Swahili.
Red Cards
Red Cards are small, easy-to-carry cards that clearly state your rights. They can be shown to an immigration agent to assert your rights during an encounter.
You can:
- Print Red Cards at ilrc.org/redcards (available in 56 languages), or
- Request copies from the Hello Neighbor office
If You Witness or Experience an ICE Encounter (Pittsburgh Area)
If you or someone near you is approached, stopped, or detained by ICE, seek support immediately.
Casa San José 24/7 Emergency Response Line
(412) 736-7167
This hotline can help:
- Report ICE activity

- Connect individuals to legal support
- Strengthen community response efforts
Saving this number in your phone can help you access it quickly if needed.
How You Can Support Your Community
Learn and Share
Watch the Know Your Rights videos, carry a Red Card, and share these resources with your workplace, school, faith community, and neighbors.
Organizations like Frontline Dignity also offer rapid response trainings for community members who want to be prepared during ICE encounters.
Stay Informed
Rely on trusted sources and accurate information. Clear facts help reduce fear and prevent misinformation from spreading.
Support Affected Families
Isolation can be one of the most harmful impacts of enforcement activity. Offering accompaniment, childcare, rides, or simply a trusted presence to neighbors in your community can make a real difference.
You can also become a Hello Neighbor volunteer, mentor, or tutor to provide direct support. For client safety, all volunteers attend an information session and complete required clearances. Learn more on our Get Involved page.
Advocate for Dignity and Due Process
Refugees and many immigrants were legally admitted after extensive vetting. Policies that re-target families years later destabilize communities and undermine trust. Advocacy rooted in dignity and fairness helps protect families and strengthen neighborhoods.
Donate to Support Legal Education & Community Care
For more than nine years, supporters like you have helped build welcoming communities in Pittsburgh and beyond. Your generosity allows us to continue offering legal education, community resources, and direct support when it’s needed most.
Stay informed. Stand with your neighbors. And remember: you are not alone.
