<p>For those of you who aren’t familiar, Immigrant Grocery Store Days is a 3-day event started by Hello Neighbor during the pandemic to help address food insecurity. Families in our programs receive $100 to shop at an immigrant-owned grocery store, with a different store featured each of the 3 days. The owner even showed us a beautiful cake she prepared, using all store ingredients of course. Did you know Nataliya has you covered for homemade borscht? Poppy seed cake? Pierogies? And so much more. Did you know Moses (owner of Global Food) started this store to provide community members with African, Caribbean, and Latin groceries and sundries when he noticed a gap in the availability of the foods many of his neighbors were craving? We saw program participants who live as far out as Brentwood making connections with the store owner and finding ingredients from their home countries that they haven’t seen in years. Hello Neighbor staff and volunteers had a lovely afternoon with the folks at this knowledgeable Strip District staple serving Halal meats, plenty of fresh produce, and much more. Did you know - before this store’s existence, there was no place to find Halal meat in Pittsburgh? This is what building a community is all about - seeing a need and filling it so that everyone has a comfortable place here in our beautiful city. We welcomed about 40 families to shop Saturday afternoon, and can’t wait to do it all again next year.</p> <p class="text-align-center text-size-medium text-weight-bold">Big thanks to all who participated in this year’s Immigrant Grocery Store Days.
