Our nation’s values as a country of hope and opportunity continue to be diminished. After
withdrawing humanitarian protections for Afghans already resettled in the U.S., the
administration has now stopped processing immigration applications from Afghanistan,
effectively saying no to families who continue to face insecurity, trauma, and displacement.

More than half of Afghanistan’s 42 million people require humanitarian assistance. Many risked
their lives for the U.S., helped rescue others, or fled persecution. Turning our backs on them
now means not only rejecting individuals in need of support, but also losing allies and
undermining trust in America’s commitment to human rights and welcome.

As refugees and immigrants continue to be stigmatized, it is more important than ever to
challenge narratives that label entire communities as dangerous for isolated incidents. We reject
claims that migrants inherently reproduce “broken” conditions from their home countries. There
is no “magic transformation” needed: immigrants bring resilience, knowledge, and opportunity.
Communities thrive when people are welcomed, supported, and empowered, and it is our
responsibility to honor that potential.

In 2021, we stood with the Afghan community during a dark and unprecedented time. Since
then, we have continued supporting Afghan families and will continue this work for as long
as we can, because everyone deserves to feel fully welcomed, safe, and without fear.
