Study Buddy students received their certificate for completing the program and cash incentives for their attendance. Everyone was able to enjoy the sights at the Science Center and Highmark SportsWorks.

What is Study Buddy?

The Study Buddy program provides virtual, individualized tutoring for refugee students. The goal of the program is to help refugee students navigate online learning, stay motivated to do their work and attend class, and empower them to build relationships and ask for help.

  • Purpose
In response to COVID-19 and the shift to remote learning, Hello Neighbor launched Study Buddy in the Fall of 2020 to support immigrant and refugee students (grades 6-12) and their families via one-on-one virtual tutoring and online learning support. Since its launch, with the help of 30+ volunteer tutors, 1,004 tutoring hours were facilitated for 34 immigrant and/or refugee students throughout the 2020-2021 academic year, resulting in improved grades, confidence at school, participation in class, and trustful relationships.
  • Interested in becoming a tutor?
Our Study Buddy program runs on an academic calendar. We are currently accepting volunteer tutor applications for the Fall 2022 semester. Interested applicants are encouraged to fill out the application below. (Tutors do not need to be based in Pittsburgh.)
