Dear Friends and Supporters of Hello Neighbor,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. In honor of 2023 Welcoming Week which has just recently come to an end, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we've shared here at Hello Neighbor since I founded the organization in 2017, and the essential role you've played in making Hello Neighbor a symbol of welcoming and inclusion in Pittsburgh and throughout the nation.

It is a moment when we come together to recognize that our collective strength is rooted in our richness of cultures and backgrounds.

We celebrate the stories that have brought us here, and we reaffirm our commitment to extending a warm and open embrace to those who seek a new beginning.

At Hello Neighbor, hello is not just a word; it's the cornerstone of everything we do. We believe that every person, regardless of where they come from, should be greeted with kindness and given the opportunity to thrive, to build a brighter future, and to contribute to the vibrant mosaic of American communities.

Through our anchor mentorship program to our educational programming, physical and mental health services, programs for mom, baby and the whole family plus refugee resettlement, legal and employment services, we empower new neighbors to overcome the challenges they face when starting anew.

In August of 2021, Sultana escaped Afghanistan following the fall of Kabul. She spent several months on a military base in Virginia, then received approval to resettle in Pittsburgh. Hello Neighbor welcomed her, provided housing, core services and helped her begin her new life.

However, one important part of her life was missing - her husband, Abdul.

Sultana and Abdul were separated when she fled Afghanistan.

After Abdul’s arrival, our team helped welcome him by providing employment assistance, cultural orientation, and ESL services. Recently our team was also able to support Sultana with enrollment into our Smart Start program as she is expecting a baby boy in 2024! This is where your invaluable support makes all the difference. Your generosity enables us to support more refugee families, offer essential resources, and foster the sense of belonging that is crucial to move beyond surviving to thriving.

The impact of your gift reverberates far beyond the immediate assistance it provides. It sends a message of hope to those who might feel lost and alone, people like Sultana and Abdul, assuring them that they are not forgotten.

It reinforces the values that make our country strong and resilient. And most importantly, it helps build bridges between cultures, fostering understanding, friendship, and collaboration among neighbors from diverse backgrounds.
