Hello Neighbor is launching a new mentorship program where neighbors, people like you, will be matched with refugee and immigrant families. The goal of a mentor is to be a friend to a refugee or immigrant family and help them integrate into Pittsburgh and their new lives.

Your Role

As a mentor, your role will be built upon each refugee family’s specific needs. This will include one-on-one time with the family, activities like going to a museum, visiting a local library, and cooking side by side in each other’s homes. This could also be important integration activities like signing kids up for pre-school, help finding new apartments or daily life skills how to read and process mail and how to look for expiration dates on food items.

Your Impact

While refugee resettlement agencies provide direct services to refugee families for 90 days, many refugees face challenges of cultural adjustment and integration into life in the United States. Often times it is difficult for refugees to become acquainted and integrated with aspects of American life. You will serve as a positive role model and we will work with you to create a work plan and goals for your time together.

Program Details

The program duration is 4 months from June - September, 2017. Hello Neighbor is committed to you giving as much as you get during your mentorship. That is why during the program you will receive training to be able to graduate with a Refugee Advocacy Certificate, a custom program we are designing to give you the tools and resources necessary to understand the global refugee crisis and how that affects refugees in Pittsburgh.

Refugee Assistance Fund

We are doing more than mentorship. We are also building a Refugee Assistance Fund. This fund will provide critical skill training, job development and childcare to assist the refugee as they seek stronger employment opportunities. Many refugees come to America with skills but no language, or skills that do not translate to jobs. The RAF will work with refugees to direct them to programs throughout Pittsburgh as well as create programming of our own to assist refugees on their road to self-sufficiency.

By building community we will build bridges and create opportunity for everyone. We hope you join us by applying to the inaugural Mentorship Program.
